A double major, double strenuous Mt. Dulang-Dulang to Mt. Kitanglad Traverse Climb

It’s on.Our much awaited Mt. Dulang-Dulang to Mt. Kitanglad Traverse Climb will finally push through come August 23-26 in the Mt. Kitanglad Range and National Park, in Bukidnon Philippines. As if climbing two of the 5 highest peaks in the Philippines is not enough, were trying to finish the climb in 3 days. Me thinks it is a double major climb or a double strenuous climb.

Mt. Dulang Dulang and Mt. Kitanglad are actually two of the several peaks (the others peaks being Mt. Maagnaw and Mt. Kalatungan) that composes the Mt. Kitanglad Range and National Park (MKNR) that covers half of the northern portion of Central Mindanao. A national forest reservation, it is home to some of the endemic flora and birds in the Philippines. Recent sightings of the renowned Philippine Eagle also boost the title of the range as an ecodiverse community.

Mt. Dulang-Dulang (D2 to mountain addicts) looms at 9, 637 ft ASL, the second highest in Mindanao and the Philippines. The all year rainy season makes it one of the coldest mountain peaks in the Philippines.Mt. Kitanglad, at 9, 509 ft ASL, is another mountain to reckon with. The last time I went there I hated going out of the bunk house for fear of freezing outside despite layers of fleece and shell. It is widely known among bird enthusiasts to be home to some rare species of woodpeckers. After that horrifying Mt. Matutum Climb I made last time, this will be my next climbing schedule. But I never bow out of challenges simply because I made mistakes on the last one. This one should make me a little bit a hard core. Or shall we say, a mountain rat.
Update on this August 20, 2007: As of now the traverse trail has been destroyed by a landslide from the series of storms that went over Philippines. We were advise by the local overseer agency not to pursue our planned traverse because of this and the line up of storm coming. We decide to just climb mount Dulang instead, which is safe for climbers now.
