Bukidnon Bloggers and Photography Society, under the able leadership Bonzenti Panganiban (Contour Blog) initiated a Google Map-up in Malaybalay City aimed at putting the City and Bukidnon’s spots in Google Maps. Heading the call of this group , Avel Manansala (Gensantos Online) together with Sox Bloggers’ Alexis Chua (Alexis Chua), Nannardz Zee (Southcotabato.org), Xyrilloid Landicho and Remo Aguilar (Hiker’s Itch) trooped to Malaybalay City and had fun helping the Bukidnon Mappers map the city within the forest and the playground of gods (province of Bukidnon).
Mapping Party or Google MapUP is a gathering of Google Map Maker users, with their laptops, fast internet connection and aided by a mapping advocate, map out places, roads, streets, establishments and more with the aim of putting these features on Google Maps.
Avel Manansala introduced Google Map Maker to the group and rallied the mappers to map their city. Alexis Chua reviewed and “walked” the participants through obtaining basic google accounts needed for map maker. Remo Aguilar gave a hands on lecture on doing edits on Google Map maker- adding a place, drawing a line, shape and reviewing edits. Alexis taught the participants further on how to moderate an edit. And since half of Malaybalay City doesn’t have a high resolution satellite image, the participants were taught how to submit a feedback to Google map maker and request for high res image of their place. Using a GPS enabled, android phone, Remo Aguilar also showed the group how to map areas without satellite imagery using GPS overlays.

The Bukidnon Google Mappers is an interesting and fun bunch of Google mappers. Highly motivated and eager , they worked overtime that afternoon adding places and edits! No wonder, this small group of mapper was not held back by limited internet connectivity and produced some hundred plus edits just that afternoon! And they are already talking about correcting the many poor details of places in their google map!
It was a fun google mapping day, our long travel was worth every minute helping this fun mapping group. Once again, we helped another Mindanao place, put its wonderful city on the map! On a more personal level, I was happy too helping the city and the province where I built my hiking and mountaineering hobby. Bukidnon is home to several of the nations highest peaks and to potential ecotourism sites that wil awe any traveller and hiker!
