This is a 8,000 hectares protected area lying within municipalities of Valencia, San Jose and Sibulan in Negros Oriental. Within this protected area are a rich forest ecosystem plus these crater lakes and various faults.  Yes, tectonic faults and volcanoes created these beautiful lake.

A major tourist attraction in Negros Oriental, Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park can easily be easily accessed from Dumaguete city proper. Ride a San Jose jeep and ask the driver to drop you off at the Sibulan entrance. There’s a big road sign and a habal habal terminal in this junction so you wont miss this corner.

Hire a habal habal to bring you to the twin lake. Be ready for a exhilarating ride over mountain tops and rolling hills!

There’s a tourist info center where you pay your entrance fee to the park. Note the scenic lake and trees just beside the center. Take photos!  When you reach the Balinsasayao Twin Lake Natural Park parking area, trek down to the lake proper entrance.

Going to Lake Danao involves riding a double body banca, then trekking atop a hill to the other side where Lake Danao is located. This is me with my double bodyguard on a double body banca.

There’s a viewing deck a top this hill but our boat said its in disarray at the moment.

After lake Danao, the boatman told me he’d bring me to another portion of the park where’s there’s a waterfall. This is where we docked and started our trek into the forest area.

After this extra trip we went back to the lake entrance, paid my fees and then explored some more the place. As an added bonus I found this fern nursery and culture just above the lake near a forested area. I chatted with the farmers for a while and learned about how they came about growing ferns here.

By the time I emerged from the fernery, the sun is almost setting already. I asked the habal habal driver to drive a bit faster yet safer still, so i can catch up with my Dumaguete City night time itinerary!
