“There’s magic in the golden hour—especially when you find yourself surrounded by sky, sea, and serenity.”
A Quick Escape That’s Worth the Drive
Just a 3-hour drive from Davao City via the coastal route through Mabini–Pantukan–Banaybanay, the City of Mati beckons with its sweeping landscapes and vibrant coastlines. When friends invited me for a spontaneous trip, I agreed—on one creative condition: I had to photograph Mati’s outdoor gems during sunrise and sunset.
What followed was a visual feast—colors bursting, clouds dancing, and light embracing every ridge and shoreline.
🌄 Golden Hour Destinations in Mati City
Sleeping Dinosaur | Sunrise View from Brgy. Badas
A 30-minute early trek from the highway to a ridge in Brgy. Badas revealed a breathtaking sight of the Sleeping Dinosaur, kissed gently by sunrise light. The early effort paid off tenfold.
Balete Bay | Morning Drama in the East
To the east of the ridge, Balete Bay bathed in pastel morning light—a painter’s dream come to life. Still waters, fiery skies, and calm winds made for perfect compositions.
Badas Ridge | High Sun Silhouettes
Once the sun had climbed higher, we embraced silhouettes—human forms outlined against vibrant skies. Sometimes, simplicity makes the boldest statement.
✈️ Above Mati: Mindanao Saga Flying Club
Just as I boarded an ultralight plane, the clouds over Mati City ignited into a fiery canvas—a once-in-a-lifetime moment of sunset brilliance from above.
If you ever wanted to feel weightless and inspired all at once, this is your ride.
🏄♂️ White Sands of Dahican Beach
Mati’s iconic Dahican Beach is a haven for surfers, skimboarders, and sun-seekers.
Long stretches of powdery white sand meet crystal-clear waters—a paradise for both thrill and stillness.
Home to the Amihan Boys, Dahican is more than a beach—it’s a way of life.
🌴 Island and Coastal Treasures
Pujada Island | Unfiltered Serenity
Remote, unspoiled, and full of thriving marine life, Pujada Island offers quiet reflection and stunning perspectives.
I found myself focusing on moments—light, texture, emotion—more than landmarks.
Brgy. Tamisan Coastal Road | Where Water Meets Sky
At sunset, Brgy. Tamisan’s mini port and mangrove-lined coast transformed into a scene that demanded silence. The calm waters reflected every hue of the sky.
🌅 Photo Highlights
- Mangroves at Dusk – Still silhouettes rooted in golden reflection
- Miniport Sunset Glow – Wharf edges catching last light
Returning to Mati: A Journey Reimagined
I first explored Mati back in 2015—surf lessons with the Amihan Boys, museum visits, and sunrise highway stops. It took three years to come back, and this return was richer, quieter, and more personal.
I now realize: Mati is more than its beaches. It’s a golden-hour paradise waiting to be rediscovered.
