Pusan Point | Caraga, Davao Oriental: Experiencing the Earliest Sunrise in the Philippines

Pusan Point is where the sun rises first in the Philippines. If you’re lucky, you might get a glimpse of a perfect sun  rising from the horizon.

Yup, Pusan Point is where the sun rises first in the Philippines. And if you’re lucky, you might get a glimpse of a perfect sun  rising from the horizon. That is, if you’re lucky.

Coming from Campawan Falls in Baganga, Davao Oriental, I went straight to Pusan Point in Caraga town Davao Oriental. Baganga to Caraga town is some 3 hour drive, including stop over for lunch and few sight seeing. Pusan point is another 30 to 45 minutes uphill drive along the coastal road. Thus I arrive late in the afternoon at Pusan Point.

I found something more than a sunrise view deck. Formerly a privately run resort, there’s a science museum housed in a modern building equipped with some conference and billet  rooms  There’s even a pool by the side of the science museum.[hr] POOL IN PUSAN

[hr] There are no accommodations for tourists at Pusan Point. This is ironic considering that the best time for tourist to go here is during sunrise which is a bit early. Pusan Point is also 25kms away from Caraga town proper. If you’re driving your own vehicle and you’re new to this road, chances are, you’d get lost. I did. The site manager offered to find a homestay in the nearest barangay but I just said thank you and headed back to Caraga proper. Luckily, I found a homestay there. There are no hotels or inns in Caraga.

I woke up early next morning and drove back to Pusan Point while it was still dark. Again, this is not something I would recommend to newbies in this place. The uphill road is literally dark although it is paved. There are also sharp uphill cliffside curves. If not for this first light, I wouldn’t brave this road.

I never had the chance to check the location of sunrise in Pusan Point, so I positioned myself and my camera gear at the most elevated platform built for sunrise viewing. Unluckily too, there are thick clouds just above the horizon covering the area where I assume the sun would rise.

Well, the cloud cover hid the rising sun. I just grabbed the opportunity to shoot the changing light hues.
